Why a hot tub is its own category of job
A dry acrylic shell is manageable. The problem is everything around it: a tub that has been in place for a decade is usually decked around, wired in, and sitting somewhere a truck cannot reach. The removal is mostly demolition and carrying, and only slightly hauling.
What happens, in order
1. Drain it
A full tub holds hundreds of gallons and weighs several tons. It has to be drained completely before anything else happens, and that takes hours rather than minutes — so it is done before the day, not on it. A garden hose siphon or the tub's own drain valve is fine. Drain to a lawn or a sewer clean-out, not into a storm drain if the water is freshly chlorinated.
2. Disconnect the power
Most tubs are hard-wired to a 240V circuit with its own breaker or a spa panel. That gets switched off and disconnected properly. This is the part not to improvise.
3. Cut it down
The shell is cut into sections in place. This is what makes the job possible in a back garden, through a side gate, or off a raised deck, and it is the reason the crew arrives with saws rather than just straps.
4. Haul the whole lot
Shell sections, the cabinet surround, the cover, the cover lifter, the pump and heater pack, and the decking boards if they came up. Metal components go to scrap.
