These are the questions people actually ask before they book. Taken from what homeowners post online rather than from what we wish they asked. Straight answers, including the ones most companies would rather not put in writing.
How much should I expect to pay for junk removal?
In the Salt Lake Valley, expect roughly $150 for a quarter-trailer load, $275 for a half, $375 for three quarters and $450–500 for a full 8×10×4 trailer, plus a $50–75 show-up and fuel fee depending on how far out you are.
As a rule of thumb: a single couch or fridge is usually a quarter load. A cleared-out garage is usually a half to three quarters. A whole-house estate cleanout is one or more full loads.
What you should not accept from anybody is a price that only appears once the truck is already in your driveway. What actually drives your price is explained here.
Should I tip junk removal guys?
No. And nobody should make you feel like you have to. Tipping is not baked into junk removal pricing the way it is with food delivery. The crew is paid properly either way.
That said: if two people have just carried a waterlogged sofa up your basement stairs in July, $10–20 each is very much appreciated and genuinely never expected. Cold drinks on a hot day go down just as well.
If you would rather do something that costs nothing, an honest Google review helps a small local crew more than a tip does.
Why is the national chain so much more expensive?
The national brands run franchises, call centers and per-truck minimums, and all of that overhead sits inside the number they quote you. A local crew has none of it.
The bigger difference is often how the price is given. A lot of national quotes are a wide range over the phone that only firms up once the truck is at your house. Which is exactly where the sticker-shock stories online come from.
Ask any company, us included, for a firm number in writing before they turn up. If they will not give you one, that is your answer.
Will the price go up when you actually arrive?
Not with us. We quote from photos before we drive out, and the number we give you is the number you pay.
The only thing that changes it is finding something genuinely different from the photos. A second room of stuff nobody mentioned, or heavy material like concrete, dirt and brick, which carry weight-based dump fees. If that happens we stop, tell you, and re-quote before anything goes in the trailer. Never after it is loaded, and never once your driveway is already full.
Send two photos to 801-516-9569: one of the pile, one from where the trailer would park. That second photo is the one almost nobody sends and the one that decides the price.
Is it cheaper to take it to the dump myself?
You can, and for a single small item that fits in your truck it is a reasonable option. Our Utah junk disposal guide lists the sites, their hours and what each will take.
What people underestimate is everything around the trip. Load charges and per-item fees at the gate, fuel, two people to lift anything substantial, and almost always more than one run. Add a strained back or a scratched tailgate and the saving disappears.
We do the lifting, take it in one visit, sort the donations, and give you a firm price up front. For anything bigger than a single item that is usually the cheaper answer as well as the easier one.
What is the minimum charge for junk removal?
Our smallest job is a quarter-trailer load at $150, plus the $50–75 show-up and fuel fee, so realistically the minimum is around $200–225. That covers a single item: a couch, a fridge, a mattress.
If you have one small item and you own a truck, the landfill will be cheaper than us and we will say so.
What do junk removal companies not take?
Anything regulated as hazardous. For us that is wet paint, stains and solvents; motor oil, petrol and other fuels; propane tanks and pressurised cylinders; asbestos; medical or biohazard waste; ammunition and explosives; and most household chemicals and pesticides.

Who has the cheapest junk removal service?
A local crew, almost always. National franchises carry franchise fees, call centers and per-truck minimums, and every one of those sits inside the number you are quoted. We do not have any of it, which is why our loads start at $150.
The bigger thing to watch is how you are quoted. A headline price that is not a firm number for your actual load is where the cheap advertised figure and the expensive final invoice part company. We quote firm from photos and hold to it.
How do I prepare for junk removal?
Almost nothing. You are paying us so you do not have to lift anything. Two things genuinely help though:
- Put it in one place if you easily can. Not required, but it speeds the job up.
- Think about parking. Somewhere to put a truck and trailer near the door matters more than people expect, especially on narrow streets.
Then send two photos before we come out. One of the pile, one from where the trailer would park. That is what makes the quote firm instead of a guess.
