Weight in the wrong place

An upright piano runs 300–600 lb and a baby grand 500–800 lb, but the weight is not the difficult part — the distribution is. Most of the mass sits high and at the back, around the iron plate and the strings, so a piano wants to tip backwards on a stair and it will take whoever is below it with it. That is the reason this needs equipment and hands rather than enthusiasm.

How it is done

The piano is strapped to a board or a dolly built for the load, the casters are never trusted (they are for moving it a foot on a flat floor and they snap), and stairs are taken with a person on each corner and one controlling the descent. A grand has its legs and lyre removed and travels on its side on a skid board. Doorframes and bannisters get protected before anything moves.

Is it worth saving?

Worth asking before you scrap it. Most mass-produced uprights from the mid-20th century are worth less than the cost of moving and tuning them, which is why so many are being given away — but a quality instrument, or one with sentimental value, is worth an honest look first. If it is in playable condition, we would rather help you pass it on than break it up. Tell us and we will set it aside instead.

When it is going for disposal

A piano that is beyond saving comes apart: the cast-iron plate and the strings are substantial scrap metal and go to a recycler, and the case timber is disposed of. It is not simply tipped whole.

What affects the price

Upright versus grand, the number of stairs and whether they turn, how far the carry is to the truck, and whether the route needs protecting. Tell us the stair count when you call — it matters more than the model.
