What counts as scrap

More than people expect. Anything predominantly metal has a recycling route: appliances, water heaters, fencing and gates, chain-link and posts, ductwork and pipe, radiators, bed frames, filing cabinets, BBQ grills, patio furniture, exercise equipment, auto and machine parts, and remodel offcuts. Metal is one of the few materials that recycles indefinitely without losing quality, so this is the highest-value part of most loads to divert.

The two that need handling differently

Anything with refrigerant — fridges, freezers, AC units and dehumidifiers. The refrigerant must be professionally recovered before the metal can be processed. That is a legal requirement, not a preference, so mention these when you book rather than leaving them in the pile.

Fuel tanks and pressurised cylinders — propane bottles, old fuel cans and compressed-gas cylinders cannot go in a load. Propane usually goes back to the exchange cage it came from; the rest goes to the Salt Lake County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center, 8805 South 700 West in Sandy, (385) 468-4380.

Should you take it to a scrap yard yourself?

If you have a clean, sorted load of a single valuable metal and a vehicle to carry it, a yard may pay you for it and that is worth doing. For the far more common case — mixed metal, some of it awkward, some of it attached to something else, no truck — the payout on mixed scrap rarely covers the trip, the loading and the time. That is the point at which having it hauled makes more sense than chasing the weight price.

Pulling it out, not just hauling it

A lot of scrap is still attached to something. Old chain-link fence, a metal shed, ductwork in a crawl space, a rusted swing set concreted into a lawn. We take it apart and out, which is usually the part people were stuck on, and level the ground afterwards where posts came up.
