Demolition first, hauling second

A shed is not a junk removal job with an extra step; it is a small demolition with a haul attached. The structure comes apart in place, which is what makes it possible to get one out of a back garden with only a side gate for access. We bring the saws and the bars, not just the trailer.

What the material means for the job

• Resin and vinyl — fastest. Panels unbolt and stack flat.
• Metal — quick to dismantle and almost entirely recyclable, so it is one of the better loads to divert to scrap.
• Timber — the most work. It produces nail-studded boards, roofing felt and shingles, and shingle tear-off is heavy for its volume.
• Anything pre-1980 with a cement-board roof or siding — do not disturb it. Some of that material contains asbestos and needs testing and licensed abatement, not a crew with a pry bar.

The base is a separate decision

A shed on timber skids lifts straight off. One on a concrete slab means deciding whether the slab goes as well — concrete is dense, so it is priced by weight rather than by volume, and it changes the number noticeably. If the slab stays, it is left swept; if it goes, the ground is levelled off.

What is inside counts too

Fifteen years of a shed usually means old paint, lawn chemicals, a part-can of mower fuel and a decade of tools. The chemicals and fuel cannot go in the load — county residents drop those free at the Salt Lake County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center, 8805 South 700 West in Sandy, (385) 468-4380. Everything else is volume, and it prices as volume, so emptying the shed before we quote gets you a more accurate number.

What you get back

A cleared, swept site. Metal to the scrap recycler, anything still usable from inside set aside for donation, and the rest properly disposed of.
