Why e-waste is not regular rubbish

Screens, circuit boards and batteries contain lead, mercury, cadmium and flame retardants. In a landfill those leach; recovered properly, the same devices give back copper, aluminium, gold and recyclable glass and plastic. That is why e-waste has its own stream, and why a TV should never go out with the household bins.

Wipe your data first

This is the one thing worth doing before we arrive. Computers, phones, tablets and — the one everyone forgets — office copiers and multifunction printers keep data on internal drives. Factory-reset or wipe them, or pull the drive and keep it. If you cannot, tell us and we will set those devices aside rather than loading them.

The heavy ones

An old rear-projection or console television can run to 200 lb and is entirely awkward to hold. Those are a two-person lift and routinely the reason someone calls rather than shifting it themselves. Same for a floor-standing copier.

The free alternative, honestly

If you have one or two items and a car, the Salt Lake County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center, 8805 South 700 West in Sandy, (385) 468-4380 accepts TVs, monitors, computers and phones free from Salt Lake County residents, Monday to Saturday. That is genuinely the cheapest route and we will say so. Where we make sense is a pile of it, anything too heavy to lift alone, or e-waste mixed in with a larger cleanout you were having done anyway.
