Four materials, not one pile

A yard clear-out usually produces four things that behave completely differently, and treating them as one heap is what makes the job awkward.

• Clean green waste — branches, brush, leaves, clippings. Light, bulky, and the part that can be composted or chipped.
• Soil, sod and rock — extremely heavy for its size. A small pile of sod outweighs a trailer of branches, so this is priced by weight rather than by space.
• Treated timber — old deck boards, landscape ties, fence posts. Pressure-treated wood cannot be burned or composted and must not go in green waste.
• Structures — fencing, playsets, pergolas, trampolines, raised beds. These need taking apart before they need hauling.

Where the line is between a can and a call

A seasonal green-waste can handles ordinary pruning. It does not handle sod, treated timber, fence panels, stumps or anything you had to use a saw on. Once the pile includes any of those, it is a haul rather than a tidy.

Stumps, roots and what we can't do

We remove cut material, dug-out root balls and small stumps that are already loose. What we do not do is grind a stump in the ground — that is a different machine and a different trade. If a stump needs grinding, get that done first and we will take the arisings away with everything else.

Timing in the valley

Late March and late October are the two weeks the entire Salt Lake Valley decides to do its yard at once. Booking a few days ahead in those windows is the difference between same-day and waiting. Outside them, same-day is usually straightforward.

What happens to it

Clean green waste goes for composting or chipping where a facility is taking it, metal from fencing and playsets goes to scrap, and only the genuinely unusable remainder is disposed of.
