Basement Cleanout: A Simple Room-by-Room Guide

Basements are where stuff goes to be forgotten, old furniture, boxes, exercise gear, holiday bins. Clearing one out feels huge, but a simple plan (and letting someone else carry it up the stairs) makes it easy. Here's how.

1. Work in zones, not all at once

Tackle one area at a time. The shelving, then the storage room, then the open space. Small wins keep you moving instead of staring at the whole basement.

2. Sort into four piles

• Keep, what you actually use
• Donate, good-condition furniture and housewares
• Recycle, metal, electronics, appliances
• Haul, broken, worn out, or long-forgotten

3. Skip the worst part
