Before you pack

Four weeks out: decide, do not sort
The mistake that costs people the most money is sorting too early and too finely. At four weeks, you only need one decision per item: is this moving with me? Anything that is not gets put in one place. You are not deciding between donate, sell and dump yet — that decision costs time and does not change what you pay to move.
Two weeks out: the stuff that is not worth moving
Movers charge by weight or by volume, so anything you would not buy again is costing you twice — once to move it, once to store it at the other end. The usual list:
- Particle-board furniture that will not survive being taken apart again
- The mattress you were already planning to replace

- Anything in the garage you have not touched since the last move
- Old TVs and computers, which are heavy, worth nothing and cannot be landfilled
One week out: book the haul, not the dump run
This is the point where people decide to borrow a truck. Moving-day and after
Leave the junk pile where the crew can reach it and keep it separate from what is being moved — the one genuinely expensive mistake is a hauler taking something that was meant to go with you. Label the pile if there is any doubt. For a rental, a broom-clean finish is usually what the deposit hangs on, so the sweep-up at the end matters more than it sounds.
