What we recycle
Metal appliances, scrap metal, and e-waste like old TVs and computers go to local recyclers whenever possible, instead of straight to the dump.
What we donate
If furniture or household items are still in good shape, we try to route them to local donation centers so they get a second life.
What's left
Whatever can't be recycled or donated is disposed of responsibly at the proper facility. You get the convenience of one pickup, and we handle sorting it out.
What actually happens to a load
A full trailer is not one thing, so it does not have one destination. We sort it on the way out. Anything still usable is set aside for donation. Metal goes to a scrap recycler. Cardboard, e-waste and appliances each have their own route. What is genuinely broken, soiled or unsellable is the only part that goes to a landfill.
Where each category goes
- Furniture and housewares in good shape — Deseret Industries, Savers or Habitat for Humanity ReStore. ReStore is the one that also takes cabinets, doors, fixtures and building materials, which is why remodel jobs often produce a ReStore run.
- Metal — appliances, fencing, bed frames, machinery and auto parts go to a scrap yard. Metal recycles indefinitely without losing quality, so this is the highest-value diversion in a typical load.
- Electronics — TVs, monitors, computers and phones contain lead, mercury and cadmium and should never be landfilled. the Salt Lake County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center, 8805 South 700 West, Sandy — (385) 468-4380 takes e-waste free from county residents.
- Fridges, freezers and AC units — the refrigerant has to be professionally recovered before the metal can be recycled. That is a legal requirement, not a preference.
- Mattresses — county landfills will accept them, but recycling separates out the steel, foam and timber instead of burying all three.
Why nobody honest promises 100%
Any hauler claiming to divert everything is either rounding generously or not telling you. Water-damaged upholstery, broken particle-board furniture, treated timber and mixed construction waste have no recycling stream that will accept them in this valley. The honest number is "most of it, and here is what happened to yours" — ask for that rather than a percentage.
What you can do to improve the odds
Tell the crew what is still good. The single biggest cause of usable furniture going to a landfill is nobody mentioning that it works. If you point at a dresser and say it is fine, it goes to donation. If it is in a pile with three broken ones, it will be treated like the pile.
