Green waste is not one material, and that is the whole problem
A yard clear-out usually produces four different things that need four different answers: clean green waste, soil and sod, treated timber, and whatever structure you pulled out. Putting them all in one pile is what makes the job awkward.
- Clean green waste — branches, brush, leaves, grass. This is the part that can be composted or chipped, and it is the lightest thing in the yard.
- Soil, sod and rock — extremely heavy for its size. A small pile of sod outweighs a trailer of branches, which is why this is priced by weight rather than volume.
- Treated timber — old deck boards, landscape ties and fence posts. Pressure-treated wood cannot be burned or composted and does not belong in green waste.
- Structures — fencing, playsets, sheds, trampolines and pergolas. These need taking apart before they need hauling.

Curbside green waste
Several valley cities run a seasonal green-waste can or a spring and autumn bulk pickup. It is the cheapest route and it only works for clean green waste in modest volumes — no soil, no treated timber, no fence panels.
Hauling it yourself
Trans-Jordan Landfill, 10473 South Bacchus Highway (SR-111), South Jordan — (801) 971-1976 is the closest option for Draper, South Jordan and Herriman; Salt Lake Valley Landfill, 6030 West California Avenue, Salt Lake City — (801) 541-4078 covers the north end of the valley. In Utah County, the Orem/Lindon transfer station is (801) 225-8538 and the Provo/Springville area is (801) 489-3027. Bring ID, expect to pay by weight or load, and call ahead — hours and accepted materials change.
Having it hauled
Worth it at the point where the pile stops being branches. If there is sod, a fence, a playset or anything needing demolition first, the job has become lifting rather than tidying.
Timing
Spring and the first cold snap in autumn are the two weeks everyone in the valley decides to do their yard at once. Booking a few days ahead in late March and late October is the difference between a same-day pickup and waiting.
